OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, has introduced metadata tagging to its ChatGPT app and DALL-E 3 AI image generator to identify AI-produced imagery. This significant development is in line with a similar initiative by Meta to label AI-generated images on its popular platforms – Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.

The metadata update is presently accessible for web users, and it is expected to be available for mobile ChatGPT users by February 12. In addition to this, OpenAI has also launched a feature that allows users to verify AI-generated images on their Content Credentials platform. This move is part of OpenAI’s commitment to apply the standards set by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to ensure content authenticity and fight against content fraud and disinformation.

However, OpenAI has recognized the inherent limitations of metadata tagging. It is not a foolproof solution to content authenticity issues as the metadata can be easily removed or may not be readily noticeable to users. Despite these challenges, the introduction of metadata tags is a significant step towards ensuring that users can distinguish between AI-produced images and those created by humans.

As part of its commitment to tackle disinformation ahead of the 2024 global elections, OpenAI is dedicated to applying the C2PA standards. This move is a proactive measure to ensure that AI technology is used responsibly, and misinformation is minimized, particularly during critical election periods.

Furthermore, OpenAI has provided a link to Content Credentials, a platform where users can check if an image is AI-generated. However, it is important to note that this feature is only applicable for newly generated AI images. As AI technology continues to advance, OpenAI’s efforts to promote transparency and authenticity in AI-generated content will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges associated with AI-produced imagery.
