Microsoft has recently unveiled a forward-thinking plan to equip millions of Indian citizens with artificial intelligence (AI) skills. This initiative is aimed at leveraging the vast potential of AI technology and securing the future of the country’s workforce. The ambitious goal is to provide AI training to 2 million individuals by 2025. This will particularly focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, along with rural areas.

In order to execute this project, Microsoft plans to work in close collaboration with national and state governments. The idea is to offer AI training to students and job seekers, primarily focusing on young women and students residing in remote and tribal regions.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, asserts that India is “uniquely positioned” to harness the benefits of AI. The company is committed to bridging the AI skills gap in the nation, equipping a new generation with the knowledge and tools to drive India’s tech industry forward.

This fresh initiative is a continuation of Microsoft’s prior commitment to train 100,000 developers in AI under the ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA scheme. The program aims to enhance the technical skills of developers, enabling them to create innovative solutions for India’s unique challenges.

Nadella has encouraged Indian developers to utilize Microsoft’s AI tools, pointing out that India is projected to have the largest number of developers on GitHub by 2027 or 2028, a number currently standing at 13.2 million. He also proposed that AI has the potential to contribute up to 10% ($500 billion) to India’s GDP target for 2025.

In line with this vision, Microsoft announced the construction of a fourth data center in Hyderabad, India. This development further signifies the tech giant’s commitment to fostering AI development in the country.

Microsoft’s Indian subsidiary, which employs nearly 18,000 people, has initiated several programs targeting the Indian market. This includes AI training for developers and a solid pledge to provide AI skills training for 2 million Indians by 2025.

The initiative undeniably underscores Microsoft’s commitment to promoting AI technology, fostering innovative thinking and ensuring that India’s workforce is ready for the future.
