United Nations Secretary-General Calls for Fossil Fuel Phase-Out and Transformation of Energy Industry

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has recently urged countries to phase out the use of oil, coal, and gas in order to fight climate change. In addition to this, Guterres has demanded that fossil fuel companies stop hindering climate progress and transform their businesses by embracing renewable energy sources.
Western states and climate-afflicted island nations are pushing for a fossil fuel phase-out, while resource-rich countries are campaigning to keep drilling. Guterres has criticized companies failing to reach modest operational emissions reductions targets and relying too heavily on “dubious offset” credits.
To combat this, Guterres has called for companies to create detailed plans with emissions reduction targets for both operations and end use. He believes that fossil fuel companies must “transform their businesses” and embrace renewable energy sources in order to effectively address the climate crisis.
Guterres has also called for more action from governments and the private sector to address the climate crisis. It is clear that a significant shift towards renewable energy sources is necessary in order to combat the effects of climate change, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, including governments, companies, and individuals, to take action.
