Artificial intelligence (AI) has been hailed as a transformative tool for global industries, but it’s not without its challenges. One of the most significant challenges posed by the proliferation of AI technology is its high energy consumption, which is contributing significantly to climate change. The interrelation between AI and climate change is a crucial factor that must be considered in future discussions on AI regulation.

AI’s energy consumption presents a unique and complex challenge to environmental sustainability. There’s no denying that the manner in which we use and regulate AI will have significant implications for our environment, particularly in terms of energy usage. As such, the regulation of AI must be approached with careful consideration of its environmental impact.

Policymakers and regulators worldwide are being urged to address the energy usage of AI systems. With the AI industry projected to grow 37% annually until 2030, leading regions like the European Union, the United States, and China are taking the initiative to implement regulatory measures.

In the European Union, for instance, steps are being taken to develop an “AI liability directive”. This directive aims to set new standards for AI use and provide compensation for those adversely affected by AI. The hope is that by establishing such measures, we can better manage the impact of AI on various aspects of society, including our environment.

Meanwhile, in India, which leads the world in AI deployment with 70% of firms having operational AI projects, the need for regulation in the AI industry has been acknowledged. According to a NetApp survey, a staggering 91% of Indian companies plan to use data to train AI models. In light of this, India’s regulatory focus will likely initially be on preventing potential job losses due to AI, but the country’s leaders also recognize the importance of addressing AI’s environmental impact.

Ultimately, the regulation of AI is a complex, multifaceted issue that requires a global approach. Recognizing the interdependence of AI and climate change is a significant step forward. As we continue to harness the power of AI, it is vital that we do so in a way that is mindful of our environment and sustainable for our planet.
