These giant waves are not formed by chance. They are the result of a combination of high tides, storms originating from the Gulf of Alaska, and higher seas. The latter is a direct result of climate change and the warming effects of El Nino.
In a study conducted by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, it was noted that California waves have grown a foot taller on average over the past 50 years. This change, while exciting for surfers, is a concerning testament to the tangible impacts of climate change on our natural environment.
The surge in big waves also goes hand in hand with stormy weather patterns and increased sea levels, which are also linked to climate change. Despite the inherent risks, surfers are not deterred by these gargantuan waves. Bianca Valenti, for example, recently took on a wave estimated to be a whopping 60 feet tall.
However, these giant waves are not without consequence. According to a study conducted by USGS oceanographer Sean Vitousek, California could lose between a quarter to three-quarters of its beaches depending on the sea-level-rise scenario. This not only threatens the surfing culture that thrives on these shores, but it also puts coastal communities at risk.
