The Rural Climate Partnership (RCP) is a dedicated organization that aims to provide rural communities with the necessary tools and opportunities to promote solutions for rural climate issues. The partnership was moved to action due to the lack of sufficient public data on greenhouse gas emissions originating from rural areas in the United States. As a result, RCP developed a Rural Emissions Analysis to understand the extent and distribution of emissions in rural areas and provide a foundation for strategies aimed at rural climate solutions.

The findings of the RCP analysis were quite revealing. Despite the lower population in rural America, the analysis found that at least 36% of US emissions, or 2,263 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMT CO2e), are produced annually in these regions. This significant potential for emissions reduction in rural and small-town America is often overlooked due to systematic underinvestment.

The reasons for such disproportionately large emissions in rural areas include localized air pollution, soil degradation, and higher-emitting activities prevalent in these areas. Such high emissions not only contribute to the overall carbon footprint but also pose health risks and environmental challenges to these communities.

To provide a comprehensive understanding, the emissions analysis also broke down the rural emissions percentage for each major economic sector. This breakdown provides an essential basis for conversations about rural investments in climate solutions. It’s a critical tool for policymakers and stakeholders to identify key areas for investment and action.

However, the data isn’t just numbers. It underscores a pressing need for more resources to help rural America build essential infrastructure, create well-paying jobs, and transition economies away from extractive and polluting industries. It highlights the urgency for sustainable development and the large-scale adoption of green technologies and practices in these regions.

The Rural Climate Partnership’s work is a significant step towards understanding and addressing rural America’s contribution to climate change. However, for rural climate solutions to be effective, there is a need for concerted and sustained effort from all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and the communities themselves. The path to a sustainable and climate-resilient rural America may be challenging, but the RCP’s initiatives provide a hopeful beginning.
