Concerns are being raised by a broad spectrum of society, including academics, activists, and athletes, regarding the potential climate impact of the anticipated 2024 Olympics in Paris. These worries persist despite repeated assurances from the organizers that the upcoming games would be the “greenest ever.”

In a report issued by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, warnings are being sounded about the enormous levels of ice usage during summer games. The production and use of ice require significant water and energy resources, contributing to environmental stress. According to the report, the 2024 Paris Olympics are expected to demand a staggering 650 tons of ice, a figure that dwarfs the quantity used in the Tokyo 2020 games more than tenfold.

The report goes further to critique the unnecessary use of ice in sports, such as cryotherapy and ice baths. It suggests that the organizers could promote better sustainability in sports by discouraging these practices.

Paris 2024 has not been immune to criticism for its sponsorship deals, particularly those with companies like Toyota. Critics argue that such associations contradict the International Olympic Committee’s sustainability efforts. They point out that the auto industry, in general, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, which are at the heart of global warming and climate change.

Taking an active role in raising climate change awareness, Olympic champion cyclist Chris Boardman embarked on an eight-day bike ride from Manchester to Paris. His journey aimed to shed light on the urgent need for climate action and sustainability.

Researchers continue to bring attention to the environmental impact caused by the excessive use of ice during summer games. The Paris 2024 games are expected to reach an “extraordinary level” of ice usage, reinforcing the urgency of this issue.

Despite the mounting concerns, the Paris 2024 organizers remain committed to delivering the “greenest ever” Games. They are focusing on economic, social, and environmental responsibility, aiming to set a new standard for large-scale international events. As the world watches, it remains to be seen whether these commitments will be fully realized in practice.
