As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow, so does the concern over the environmental impacts of AI data centers on human health and well-being.  This has brought to light the pressing need for environmental justice in the development of tech infrastructure.

Despite the known risks, there is limited research on the environmental impacts of AI data centers on humans. This lack of comprehensive studies underscores the urgency for more in-depth research in this field to better understand and address the potential harms faced by vulnerable communities. To this end, efforts are being made to assess the effects on humans through interviews with community members and provide recommendations to tech companies and policy makers globally. This approach demonstrates a commitment to centering community voices in addressing environmental harms from AI data centers.

One of the major environmental concerns surrounding AI data centers is their substantial energy consumption, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and worsens the climate crisis. This highlights the need for more sustainable solutions in tech infrastructure to minimize the negative impact of AI technology on our planet. The environmental impact of AI data centers also extends to high electricity consumption, water usage for cooling, and land use changes, emphasizing the necessity for more efficient and environmentally friendly practices in AI development.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. AI also has the potential to help track and mitigate climate change by enhancing predictions, improving materials for renewable energy, and providing comprehensive environmental insights through satellite data integration. This showcases the positive role that AI can play as a valuable tool in combating the climate crisis.

Researching and providing recommendations to mitigate the damaging impacts on humans from environmental harms caused by AI and generative AI data centers is crucial for protecting vulnerable communities. By focusing on environmental justice in tech development, we can work towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
