Former OpenAI board member Helen Toner made explosive accusations against CEO Sam Altman, claiming he had been dishonest, obstructive, and had created a toxic work environment within the company. These allegations ultimately led to Altman’s removal from his position on November 17th, 2023.
Toner’s claims included accusations that Altman had failed to disclose important information to the board, such as details about new projects and his ownership of the OpenAI Startup Fund. This lack of transparency eroded the trust of the board members, ultimately leading to Altman’s ousting.
The decision to remove Altman from his role was the result of weeks of intense discussions among the board members. The situation was kept under wraps out of fear of potential retaliation from Altman.
However, Altman’s reinstatement as CEO sparked widespread backlash and accusations from both within and outside the company. As a result, a new board was put in place at OpenAI.
Despite the outcry against his reinstatement, many OpenAI employees supported Altman’s return out of fear of reprisal and a belief that the company could not survive without him. However, two executives spoke out about a toxic atmosphere at OpenAI, accusing Altman of psychological abuse, lying, and manipulation.
It was also revealed that Altman had personally targeted Toner after she published a research paper that angered him, further contributing to the board’s decision to remove him from his position.
Despite resistance from some employees and backing from lead investor Microsoft, Altman was eventually reinstated as CEO of OpenAI. The majority of employees called for his return and the resignation of the prior board members.
