Today’s Climate Change Poster Collection focuses on Greenhouse gases. These gases, namely water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone, have a unique property that is both a boon and a bane for our planet. They possess the capacity to absorb and emit radiant energy in the thermal infrared range, leading to what scientists call the greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect, while being a natural phenomenon, has been rapidly exacerbated by human activities. The primary culprits are the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, both of which lead to a significant increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere. This upsurge, in turn, has been a significant driver of global warming, a reality we are all grappling with today.

To put it into perspective, without the presence of greenhouse gases, Earth’s average surface temperature would be a chilling -18 °C. Thanks to these gases, the current average temperature is a more hospitable 15 °C. However, the increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activities is tipping this balance towards a warmer, and potentially uninhabitable, planet.

Over the industrial era, this human-induced spike in greenhouse gases has been stark. Just looking at carbon dioxide, human activities have caused a 45% increase in its atmospheric concentration. Methane, though present in a lower concentration, is also a cause for concern. It is more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, thereby playing a considerable role in global warming.

Nitrous oxide, another potent greenhouse gas, is primarily produced by soil cultivation practices, fossil fuel combustion, and biomass burning. Like methane, it is present in lower concentrations but is highly effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

In fact, the current concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere is the highest it has been in the last 800,000 years. This is a sobering fact that underscores the urgent need to address this issue.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established to assess the risk of human-induced climate change. The primary focus of the IPCC is the increase in greenhouse gases and the potential fallout from this unchecked rise.

The escalating levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere are a pressing concern. The ramifications of this issue are already being felt, and unless we take significant steps to curb our greenhouse gas emissions, the future of our planet looks bleak. The need of the hour is global commitment and swift action to mitigate the threat of climate change.
