Today’s Climate Change Poster Collection highlights Green hydrogen, anticipated to play a fundamental role in the shift towards sustainable energy and achieving net-zero emissions. This is due to its capacity to be produced in a climate-neutral manner. Green hydrogen has rapidly emerged as a preferred option for storing energy derived from renewable sources. Additionally, it can facilitate energy transport over long distances from energy-rich regions to those with high demand, making it a key player in the global energy system.

The importance of green hydrogen in reducing emissions was recognized at the recent COP26 summit. The event served to highlight the role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing heavy industries such as freight, shipping, and aviation sectors, where other forms of carbon reduction are less effective.

Several initiatives are on board to increase the production and uptake of renewable and low carbon gases like hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen Catapult is one such initiative. Also, strategic plans by several nations have been put in place to enhance the production and use of these critical gases.

However, the journey towards harnessing the full potential of hydrogen in accelerating the energy transition is not without challenges. Cleaner production methods, lower costs, and more project completions are needed to overcome these hurdles. At present, the majority of hydrogen is produced using natural gas and coal, which leads to significant carbon emissions. Therefore, to achieve the targets set in the Paris Agreement, a shift towards more decarbonized methods of hydrogen production is crucial.

Green hydrogen production involves a process known as electrolysis. This process uses renewable electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water, thereby providing a completely sustainable energy source.
