Today’s Climate Change Poster Collection focus on Carbon sequestration, a method that aims to capture and store carbon that would normally remain in the atmosphere. This process is critical in helping to reduce the effects of climate change, a global issue threatening the survival of our planet and its diverse ecosystems. Essentially, carbon sequestration is a strategy to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions that significantly contribute to the warming of the Earth’s surface.

One of the primary methods of carbon sequestration is Geological Carbon Storage (GCS). This process involves injecting Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the subsurface of the Earth for a geological timescale. As a result, the CO2 is stored away, reducing the amount that remains in the atmosphere. Due to its potential effectiveness, GCS is considered a viable solution for mitigating the impacts of climate change.

While the functions of CO2 sequestration and utilization may differ, they share a common goal: reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Both processes aim to decrease the amount of harmful gases released into the atmosphere, contributing to the overall effort against climate change.

Soil carbon sequestration, another method of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), is another vital part of this equation. This process relies on intentional land management to enhance carbon storage in organic matter and labile, inorganic forms. The aim is to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil, effectively reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The process of sequestering Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) is dependent on the presence of nitrogen (N). In order to achieve the SOC sequestration rate promoted in the 4PT initiative, it is estimated that 100 Tg N y−1 would be required. This estimate assumes a soil C to N ratio of 12. By focusing on the management of nitrogen in soils, we can effectively increase the rate of SOC sequestration, furthering our efforts in combating climate change.

Carbon sequestration, whether it’s geological or soil-based, plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change. By capturing and storing carbon, we can reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere, helping to mitigate the impacts of global warming and preserve our planet for future generations.
