Nestled in the southern part of Los Angeles County, Viet’s residence sits on a steep slope that has become a cause for concern due to the threat of landslides, particularly during heavy rainstorms. The atmospheric river storms that battered Los Angeles in early February have led to extensive damage, triggering high-volume flash floods and landslides, and instilling fear in residents like Viet.

After an initial rainstorm, Viet noticed an area of mushy soil on his backyard slope that was beginning to lose its ground cover, an alarming sign of instability. The situation worsened following a subsequent storm, which triggered a 40-foot-wide river of mud, rock, and roots to barrel down his hill.

Many experts believe that climate change is the driving force behind the increased intensity of these storms. Predictions point to a trend of more rain instead of snow at higher elevations due to global warming. This shift results in faster and stronger downpours, further heightening the risk of landslides.

Stabilizing and restoring the slope in Viet’s backyard is a complicated, lengthy, and costly endeavor. Viet had to take out a $50,000 construction loan to finance the work, which includes the installation of a “pipe and board” system to reshape the slope. Besides the landslide risk, the steep slope of his yard also posed a potential danger to his daughter who could easily fall and get injured.

Despite being aware of the terrain issues, Viet and his wife made the decision to buy their home on the hill, known as “the Hollywood Riviera”, five years ago. They regarded it as a solid investment. However, the reality of living on a steep slope has come with its fair share of challenges and risks.

To mitigate future landslides, Viet has taken the initiative to repair his yard. This involves not just stabilizing the slope, but also enhancing drainage systems to cope with heavy rainfall. Despite the challenges and costs, the safety of his family and the preservation of his property remain Viet’s primary concerns. The ongoing restoration work is a testament to his resilience and commitment to safeguarding his home against the forces of nature.
