Understanding the climate impact of aviation is the central focus of the Special Issue, which scrutinizes the intricate relationship between advancements in air transportation and our future climate. This noteworthy issue invites research related to fresh technological advancements, operational strategies, policy approaches, and climate impact assessments. There is a particular interest in non-CO2 effects of aviation, an area that requires extensive exploration and understanding.
The Special Issue promotes interdisciplinary research, effectively merging the fields of atmospheric physics/chemistry with aviation-related disciplines such as aeronautical engineering and aviation management. This approach is vital in fostering a comprehensive understanding of the climate impact of aviation, which is a highly complex and multifaceted issue.
The research could venture into the enhancement of existing methodologies or delve into the creation of new procedures to evaluate the climate impact of aviation. The Special Issue encourages the submission of both theoretical and experimental studies, including comprehensive reviews and surveys.
A unique method to address errors in estimating air-sea carbon dioxide fluxes using Earth system models is also introduced in the study. A Bayesian hierarchical model is proposed, which accommodates the uncertainty of air-sea CO2 flux estimation derived from both observational data and Earth system models.
Applied to global surface ocean pCO2 data spanning from 1998 to 2019, the model has demonstrated a significant improvement in estimation accuracy. This study reveals that the Bayesian hierarchical model surpasses traditional methods in representing the spatiotemporal variability of the air-sea CO2 flux.
These findings hold immense potential to greatly enhance our understanding and forecasting of the ocean’s role in the global carbon cycle. Ultimately, this study and the Special Issue at large, contribute significantly to the broader conversation on climate change, offering fresh insights and innovative strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of human activities.
