Climate change, a global issue with potentially catastrophic consequences, is now a major concern for every sector, including public relations. Saudi Arabian marketing consultancy, W7Worldwide, has recently published a report exploring the role of the PR sector in addressing the climate crisis. This comes in light of escalating climate change impacts such as severe heatwaves, droughts, and floods that are causing untold damage worldwide.

The report reveals some alarming climate change data, emphasizing the urgent need for action. For instance, it states that 90% of natural disasters are weather-related and climate-related. Moreover, the global economy is projected to suffer around $178 trillion in losses over the next 50 years due to climate change. These figures underline the immensity of the climate crisis and the need for all sectors, including PR, to play a part in mitigating its effects.

Effective communication is vital in addressing climate change. The report cites figures like renowned broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, who has stated that saving our planet necessitates effective communication. Furthermore, the United Nations has urged public communication on the impacts of climate change to raise awareness and inspire action.

An IPRA survey cited in the W7Worldwide report reveals that 81% of respondents anticipate climate change becoming more significant in their work in the next two years. Additionally, a resounding 90% believe that the PR profession has a crucial role in addressing climate change, highlighting the industry’s acknowledgment of its responsibility towards this global issue.

In response to this, W7Worldwide has developed a comprehensive guide titled “7 Communication Strategies for Recovery from Covid-19 in the post-COP26 climate change conference”. This guide aims to help companies develop communication strategies that prioritize environmental issues within their social responsibility frameworks.

W7Worldwide outlines seven key post-COP26 communication strategies for sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. These include taking a leadership role in climate change and integrating sustainability into brand values. By doing so, companies can align their business practices with the urgent need for climate action and sustainability.

The firm also stresses the importance of businesses effectively communicating their sustainability efforts to stakeholders and the wider public. By doing so, they can build trust and credibility, crucial in today’s environment-conscious consumer market.

Furthermore, W7Worldwide recommends using data and information transparently to demonstrate a company’s commitment to sustainability. This involves informing and educating stakeholders about climate change, and the communication strategies are aimed at preparing businesses for future challenges and opportunities in a post-COVID, post-COP26 world.

W7Worldwide’s report emphasizes the PR sector’s critical role in addressing climate change and outlines strategies for businesses to effectively communicate their sustainability efforts. As the world continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, the role of effective communication in fostering understanding, inspiring action, and creating a sustainable future cannot be overstated.
