Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a US-based corporation, is pioneering sustainability efforts in the biopharma industry with their innovative plant-based films. The company has developed a new film that has the potential to eliminate carbon emissions from plastic resin. This sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel materials represents a significant leap forward in the quest for green solutions.

The film is a critical component of Thermo Fisher’s single-use technology bioprocessing containers (BPCs). These BPCs are special because they utilize plant-based materials to create biobased films. This innovation is not just a theoretical concept; it has been recognized and certified by an international authority, the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). The ISCC PLUS certification received by these biobased films confirms their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provides customers with a credible way to meet their sustainability objectives.

From early 2025, biopharma manufacturers can source these films to incorporate into their systems. Thermo Fisher is committed to supporting these manufacturers, providing assistance in monitoring and tracking their carbon reduction progress.

The company’s sustainability efforts don’t stop at biobased films. Thermo Fisher also runs a recycling program for used BPCs. This initiative helps divert waste from landfill or carbon-intensive incineration, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Thermo Fisher is indeed leading the way in introducing biobased solutions to reduce the climate impact of therapy manufacturing processes. Their recycling service is another example of this commitment. Through this service, used BPCs are transformed into high-quality plastic lumber, contributing to the reduction of plastic waste in landfills and incineration.

Thermo Fisher’s dedication to sustainability is reflected in five key areas: minimizing the use of hazardous materials, reducing waste and resource consumption, improving energy efficiency, responsible packaging and shipping, and extending product lifespans. These efforts demonstrate that Thermo Fisher is not just talking about sustainability – they are actively implementing solutions to make it a reality.
