Global packaging and paper company Mondi has recently conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for its innovative packaging solution, Hug&Hold, to evaluate its environmental impacts compared to traditional plastic shrink wrap. Hug&Hold, which is designed as a recyclable alternative to plastic shrink wrap for PET bottle packs, features a kraft paper sleeve and a corrugated handle. This move is part of Mondi’s commitment to making all its packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.
The LCA carried out by Mondi is ISO-compliant and critically reviewed, ensuring its credibility and reliability. It analyzed 16 different indicators that measure the life cycle impacts of products. This comprehensive assessment covers various stages, including raw material acquisition, production, and end of life treatment. The evaluation used the Environmental Footprint (EF) method, a widely accepted approach in assessing the environmental impacts of products and services.
The results of the LCA revealed that Hug&Hold has a lower environmental impact across multiple categories compared to plastic shrink wraps. These categories include climate change, fossil resource use, water use, and freshwater eutrophication. More notably, the carbon footprint of Hug&Hold is 43% lower than the average LDPE virgin plastic shrink wrap and 15% lower than LDPE shrink wrap with 100% recycled content.
With these figures, Hug&Hold emerges as a highly recommended packaging solution for reducing the climate change impacts of packaging. It demonstrates how Mondi is taking the lead in developing sustainable packaging solutions that can significantly contribute to environmental conservation.
To further enlighten the public about its revolutionary product, Mondi is hosting a free webinar on 5 June 2024 at 2pm. The online discussion will delve into the current state of the beverage packaging market and the sustainability benefits of Hug&Hold. This event is an excellent opportunity for businesses and individuals to learn more about the role of sustainable packaging in addressing environmental issues and achieving a more sustainable future. The webinar indeed marks another milestone in Mondi’s journey to drive change within the packaging industry.
