The GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf and The R&A are taking significant strides to tackle the pressing issue of climate and carbon impact in golf. Through a class that will host a series of discussions, the organizations aim to shed light on the importance of greenkeeping and the role it plays in maintaining sustainability in the sport. The class plans to bring together experienced greenkeepers and climate experts who will share their insights and experiences.

This collaborative effort will share international scientific research, evaluate actual emissions data, and highlight practical steps taken by golf facilities and clubs worldwide. The goal is to use this information to educate and inspire the golf community to adopt sustainable practices. As part of this endeavor, a new carbon calculator tool will be introduced, aimed at measuring golf facility emissions and sequestration.

The class will be facilitated by Jonathan Smith of the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf and John Kemp of The R&A’s Golf Course 2030. Both Smith and Kemp will leverage their deep knowledge and insights to guide the discussions and provide valuable information to participants.

The environmental impact of golf has been a subject of increasing concern over the years. Golf courses, due to their significant daily water consumption, can cause environmental harm, especially in the context of climate change and water scarcity. The construction and maintenance of golf courses can also have a high environmental impact, including ecosystem destruction.

To mitigate these issues, many golf courses are implementing eco-friendly practices. These include biodiversity protection, solar energy use, water recycling, and pesticide reduction. Such practices aim to lessen the environmental impact and promote a more sustainable approach to golf.

Despite these efforts, golf courses can still lead to habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution due to their large land and resource consumption. Hence, the class hosted by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf and The R&A is a much-needed step towards addressing these environmental challenges and promoting a more sustainable future for golf.
