The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and DHL Group have recently made a significant stride towards improving climate-related initiatives and agribusiness. The duo have formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This pivotal partnership was unveiled at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference, attracting attention to their shared objectives.
Among the joint initiatives is the “Innovation for Food Systems Transformation,” a global innovation challenge. The competition is geared towards enhancing food preservation methods, curbing food waste in African markets, and expanding global market accessibility for producers. The move is expected to contribute significantly to efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development goals.
The partnership extends to the preparation for the launch of the UNIDO Venture Labs. This program is designed to bring together multinational corporations, startups, and local stakeholders, fostering collaboration and innovation in addressing global challenges. The partnership’s primary focus is seeking technology providers with sustainable solutions for the agribusiness supply chain and logistics. The emphasis is on the ‘first-mile’ supply chain, a critical component in improving farmers’ livelihoods and promoting a sustainable food system.
The UNIDO-DHL collaboration has identified key areas of interest for their partnership, including clean technology, perishable logistics, sustainable business models, smart solutions, and sustainable packaging and containers. These areas are viewed as instrumental in achieving the desired transformation in the agribusiness sector.
Gunther Beger, the Managing Director of UNIDO’s Directorate for SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation, expressed optimism about the potential of the partnership. According to Beger, the collaboration could establish sustainable food supply chains and address food security, both of which are pressing global issues.
The overarching goal of the UNIDO-DHL partnership is to reduce food waste, promote sustainability, and create inclusive markets for producers. The collaboration marks a significant step in the right direction towards achieving a greener and more inclusive global economy.
