The total solar energy absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and land masses is approximately 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per year. This energy drives Earth’s climate and weather and supports all life forms, making it an integral part of our planet’s ecosystem.

Solar technologies can be broadly categorized as either passive or active, depending on how they capture, convert, and distribute solar energy. Active techniques include photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power, and solar water heating. These methods have been recognized by the International Energy Agency in 2011 for their significant long-term benefits. The development of affordable, inexhaustible, and clean solar energy technologies can enhance energy security, sustainability, and reduce pollution.

Despite the intermittent nature of solar energy, which requires large-scale storage systems or a network of interconnected power producers, it remains a promising renewable resource. This is due to its inexhaustibility in the human time scale, and its lack of harmful emissions or need for transportation or pipelines. Therefore, solar energy continues to be a viable, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional energy sources.
