Human activities are currently responsible for a staggering 42 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. This alarming number highlights the urgent need for action to combat climate change.

To address this issue, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has determined that we can only emit an additional 300 to 600 billion tonnes of CO2 from 2020 onwards if we want to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, recent projections indicate that we may surpass the 1.5° C threshold within the next five years in around 70% of scenarios. This alarming prediction emphasizes the need for immediate and effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In response to this pressing challenge, a team of researchers has developed a comprehensive computer simulation to analyze and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This simulation combines climate models, economic models, and a database of 1200 energy-related technologies. The aim is to provide policymakers and stakeholders with a tool to evaluate different scenarios for achieving a climate turnaround.

This simulation tool, aptly named “ClimateTURN,” offers an interactive platform to explore the potential impact of various climate mitigation strategies. By inputting different variables and parameters, users can assess the effectiveness and feasibility of different approaches.

The research paper detailing the study and the development of ClimateTURN has recently been published in the academic journal Energy Policy. This publication ensures that the findings and methodology are peer-reviewed and accessible to the wider scientific community.
