Wildfires in Canada have caused air pollution in the Northeastern United States, including New York City, that is hazardous to public health. This highlights the urgent need for the world to take action on climate change. The Republican presidential candidates are largely ignoring the severity of climate change and its impact on public health, putting the planet and future generations at risk.

Former President Donald Trump’s dismissal of climate science and environmental regulations has set us back in our efforts to address climate change. Some Republican candidates acknowledge climate change, but they reject government efforts to reduce emissions, prioritizing their own interests over the health of the planet.

While some Republicans such as Chris Christie and Gov. Doug Burgum support addressing climate change through innovative carbon capture programs, this alone is not enough to solve the problem. The world needs to reduce carbon emissions from all sources, including transportation, electricity generation, and manufacturing.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is gaining popularity among Republicans as a potential presidential candidate for 2024. DeSantis’ efforts to preserve the Everglades and combat climate change have earned him praise from experts. His significant investment in Everglades restoration and algal bloom prevention shows his commitment to protecting the environment.

DeSantis’ focus on environmental issues could help the Republican Party attract younger voters who prioritize climate action. However, DeSantis’ record on other environmental issues, such as offshore drilling and water pollution, has come under fire and could hurt his appeal to voters who prioritize environmental protection.

The world needs urgent action on climate change to reduce carbon emissions and protect public health. While some Republicans are acknowledging this, more needs to be done to address the severity of the issue. Governor Ron DeSantis’ focus on environmental issues could help the Republican Party attract younger voters, but his record on other environmental issues needs scrutiny. The environment is a critical issue for all political parties, and it is vital that we all work together to protect our planet and future generations.
