Google Invests in AI Startup Anthropic

Alphabet Inc’s Google has recently invested nearly $400 million in the artificial intelligence start-up, Anthropic. The two companies have also announced a partnership in which Anthropic will use Google’s cloud computing services. This deal is the latest example of an alliance between a tech giant and an AI start-up in the field of generative AI.

The investment gives Google a stake in Anthropic but does not require the start-up to spend the funds buying cloud services from Google. Instead, Google’s cloud division will lend computing power and advanced AI chips to the company for its future AI products. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former leaders of OpenAI, including siblings Daniela and Dario Amodei.

In January, Anthropic released a limited test of a new chatbot named Claude, which is designed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The partnership between Google and Anthropic follows Microsoft’s $10 billion investment in OpenAI, underscoring the importance of AI in the tech industry and the willingness of established companies to invest in startups in the field.

The deal provides Google access to advanced AI systems while Anthropic receives funding and cloud-computing resources from Google. Anthropic plans to expand access to its language model assistant, Claude, in the coming months.

Google’s investment in Anthropic marks the company’s commitment to AI, particularly beyond its core search business. CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that Google plans to release chatbots in the coming weeks and months, allowing consumers to use them as a companion to search.

In conclusion, the Google-Anthropic partnership is a testament to the continued growth and evolution of AI in the tech industry. The deal provides access to advanced AI systems and funding for Anthropic, while Google gains a stake in the company and the opportunity to expand its AI capabilities.
